Father’s Day

The first Father's Day took place in 1908 to honour men killed in a coal mine in West Virginia. It was meant to be a one-time event, but Washington State made it a holiday in 1910 and it eventually became a permanent equivalent to Mother's Day, which originated in the 1860s.

Nova Scotia’s mining and quarrying industry has reduced its injury rate by 90% since the Westray inquiry report was released in 1997. We believe the most important thing to come out of a mine is the miner, and our modern safety record reflects this.
